She has served in many positions, from Destroyer Tender to Sixth Fleet Flagship. She has been halfway around the world dozens of times, from Mediterranean Sea cruises to the Suez Canal to Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.
The USS Puget Sound has had a long and important history. Built by the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1965, and she was commissioned on April 27, 1968. She served with a standard compliment of 1420 Officers and Enlisted personnel until decommissioning on January 27, 1996. The USS Puget Sound is a Samuel Gompers Class Destroyer/Cruiser Tender. As an Auxiliary ship, her main duties were to support combatant vessels or ships-of-the-line. Her primary mission was to fix and repair all types of equipment found onboard other US Naval ships. She could function as a fuel tanker, resupply ship, repair anything onboard a ship that did not require dry dock facilities, medical and dental facilities, and ammunition resupply. Her Nuclear Support Facility had the capability of refueling nuclear vessels.
The USS Puget Sound's sister ships were the USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37), USS Yellowstone (AD-41), USS Acadia (AD-42), USS Cape Cod (AD-43), and the USS Shenandoah (AD-44).
